Utah Chess Association Scholastic Committee

The mission of the Utah Chess Association Scholastic Committee (UCASC) is to promote scholastic chess in Utah.  The UCASC is part of the Utah Chess Association.  See further details here.

 

Structure of the UCA Scholastic Committee

-  The UCA Scholastic Committee is comprised of any willing scholastic chess coach or parent in Utah.

-  Meets regularly (about once a month) regarding Utah scholastic chess issues.

-  Reports issues, concerns, decisions, etc. to UCA Board.

-  "One-vote-per-school" on voting issues.

-  Elects chairman (chairs meetings, reminds coaches and parents of meetings, represents Scholastic Committee, reports to UCA Board), vice chairman (helps chairman), secretary (takes minutes of meetings and distributes them), and other positions, as needed (scholastic tournament clearinghouse director, scholastic ratings director, state elementary tournament organizer, tournament guidelines subcommittee, etc.), to one-year terms.

Vision and Goals: 

-  -  to promote scholastic chess in Utah.

-  -  -  -  more players,

-  -  -  -  more schools involved,

-  -  -  -  more (and better) tournaments,

-  -  -  -  more chess opportunities.

-  -  to improve the transition from elementary chess to the USCF and from elementary chess to secondary chess.

-  -  to oversee the state elementary tournament and maintain its high quality.

Duties and Powers:

-  -  election of Scholastic Committee officers.

-  -  determine rules and format and standards for state elementary tournament.

-  -  make decisions regarding broad scholastic chess issues--i.e. scholastic ratings, tournament scheduling and clearinghouse, general "guidelines" for tournaments.

-  -  make recommendations for use of UCA scholastic funds (subject to review by UCA Board).

-  -  -  -  chess club start-up and development,

-  -  -  -  purchase of chess sets and other supplies,

-  -  -  -  opportunities for special tournaments and events,

-  -  -  -  promoting transition to USCF-rated play,

-  -  -  -  financial assistance (fee waivers),

-  -  -  -  individual awards of scholarships.
